Frequently Asked Questions

From questions about pooping to concerns about the proper way to hitchhike, this page attempts to address the issues and questions that everyone has about thru hiking.

F.A.Q.

How do you go to the bathroom?

Dig a cathole 6 to 8 inches deep, at least 200 feet from water, camp, and trails. Pack out your toilet paper in a zip-top bag. It is simple, and it keeps the trail clean for everyone behind you.

How do you carry enough food and water?

You do not. You resupply every 3 to 7 days in trail towns, and you carry what you need between them. On the CDT I did a few 40-mile water carries. You learn to drink a liter at the source and walk.

How much does your pack weigh?

My Florida Trail kit was 8 pounds 2 ounces base weight. On the AT in 2016 I started near 27 pounds with food and water. Lighter means more miles and fewer injuries. The full list is on the gear page.

Do you get lonely?

Sometimes. Mostly you are too tired to notice. And the trail provides: some of the best people I know, I met walking.

What about bears, snakes, and lightning?

Hang your food or use a bear canister where required. Watch where you put your hands and feet. Get off ridgelines when storms build. Fear is useful in small doses. Panic is not.

How do you afford it?

Save money, quit your job, walk. A thru-hike costs most people $5,000 to $8,000 all in. I kept my expenses low by hiking light and fast and eating a lot of peanut butter.
